Waste disposal
What is the radioactive waste ? How is it treated ? Which criteria are taken into account ?
The answers will be different wether one submits this issue in France, or in Germany,or in Russia, or in the United-States...
Which processes are implemented to ensure the safety and security when one deals with nuclear waste ?
The waste is classified according to two criteria:
- The duration of its radioactivity.
- The level of radioactivity.
International criteria have allowed to define different types of waste :
- High level and long life waste (HLW) and mid-level and long life waste: this waste highly radioactive comes from the reactor core. Its radioactivity remains high during hundreds of thousands or millions of years.
The radioactive waste which requires specific and elaborated protective actions is high level and long life waste, that is to say mainly the nuclear power stations usedfuel. This waste is stored in reprocessing factories. The drums in which it is stored aresubject to various operations: OPENING, SEALING.
PROTEM designed several specific machining or welding equipment to perform the opening and sealing of such drums.
- Mid and low level (LLW) and short life waste: this waste is mainly technologic waste (gloves, overalls, tools, etc...) which has been contaminated during its use in power station or in a cycle installation. Its toxicity does not last more than 300 years.
PROTEM designed a complete treatment cell of such waste (see the technical datasheet describing this cell).
- Very low level waste: this waste is mainly composed of contaminated materials coming from the dismantling of nuclear sites: scraps, wreckage, concrete... This waste is low radioactive but there are greater quantities than in other categories.
PROTEM designed several specific machining and/or welding equipment used for the conditioning of this waste.
